This course is designed as an introduction to caring for sheep. The course provides the background knowledge of the skills required and leads into the other FarmSkills course such as sheep lameness, lambing, sheep nutrition and parasite control.

Learning Outcomes

  • Handling - Tipping, Injections, Checking feet, Body condition scoring, Taking temperatures, Adequate shelter and space
  • Nutrition; what does it mean to be a ruminant - Biology: Lamb to ewe, Colostrum to simple to ruminant, Milk and colostrum feeding (how much), Feeding the ewe
  • Legalities - Medicine book, Movements, Tailing and castrating, Ear tagging, Holding number
  • Sheep calendar - Activity: Making a sheep calendar, Parasite control, Vaccinations
